Brookens’ own Jan Waterhouse has been selected as one of the newest members of the WorldCat Local User Group leadership team. WorldCat Local is the University of Illinois Springfield – Brookens Library’s Quick Search.

What is WorldCat Local:

WorldCat Local delivers single-search-box access to more than 969 million items from your library and the world’s library collections. You’ll find:

  • 674+ million articles with one-click access to full text
  • 29+ million digital items from trusted sources like Google Books, OAIster and HathiTrust
  • 13+ million eBooks from leading aggregators and publishers
  • 44+ million pieces of evaluative content (Tables of Contents, cover art, summaries, etc.) included at no additional charge
  • 221+ million books in libraries worldwide

Your WorldCat Local service gets users the results they’re looking for and then connects them right to local, group and global resources through the services you already provide. It also gives your library visibility on the Web through the cooperative’s partnerships with leading search engines, social networking services and other popular sites.

WorldCat Local lets people explore the full breadth of resources your library provides in a single, streamlined search experience. Once they identify the items they need, integration with your library’s delivery options lets users get to those resources quickly and easily.

Learn more about Jan!

Janetta (Jan) Waterhouse is the Director of Library Information Systems and Technical Services at the University of Illinois Springfield (UIS). She worked in IT for over a decade before completing a MA in Library and Information Science at The University of Iowa. She has been working in the area of library technology for nearly ten years and has been at UIS since December 2010. UIS was an early adopter of WorldCat Local and has been easing its way into making it the single search, recently branded Quick Search, for the campus since 2008. This summer each subject- and course-specific Research Guide will include database-specific WorldCat Local searches and WorldCat Knowledge Base will become the primary OpenURL resolver and knowledge base for link resolution and journal/citation searches. Jan’s upcoming focus is training UIS librarians and staff with WorldCat Local and WorldCat Knowledge Base to be able to use them to the fullest extent possible with user assistance and operational workflows. She has recently completed a year-long IT Leadership Program with the University of Illinois and is excited to put these skills to use in this new role with the WorldCat Local User Group.

Know A Librarian – Sarah

Spring has sprung and we are happy to introduce you to yet another one of our fantastic librarians – Sarah!

She came to Springfield in Nov. 2009 after getting her Masters in Library and Information Science from Dominican University in River Forest, Illinois. At Brookens, she does the typical librarian stuff: library instruction, research consultations and orders books.  She also manages the Information and Reference Desk, gets her geek on with the library’s iPads, and is 1 of the 3 people behind the tweets and Facebook posts for the library.  If you’re in the library, chances are you’ll see her at the Information and Reference Desk.  When out and about on campus, she can typically be found volunteering at a Student Life event.

There are lots of things Sarah loves about being a librarian.  But one of her favorite parts of the job is buying books for the Curriculum Collection.  With a background in High School English Education, she has always been an avid reader of Young Adult literature.  Books like The Hunger Games, Feed, and The City of Ember are among some of her favorites with Harry Potter at the top of the list.  A huge fan of both the Harry Potter books and the movies, Sarah has read and watched them more times than she can count.  In case you’re wondering, she’s a Hufflepuff and yes, she’s been to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando, FL.

Outside of the Library, Sarah spends most of her time hanging out with friends here in Springfield or visiting friends in Chicago and Madison, WI. She enjoys cooking and hosting parties. Other than that, she watches LOTS of movies, both in the theater and at home on her couch.

Snapshot Day 2012

Snapshot Day: A Day in the Life of Brookens Library is Wednesday, April 18th. Snapshot Day documents the ins and outs of the library through photos. We also use it as an opportunity to ask those using our facility a few simple questions via a survey so we can provide better resources and services. If you participate by taking a survey you will receive a FREE Brookens Library bag – and an entry to win one of 3 $5 value cards that can be used toward food or printing! Feel free to participate yourself or send your students over! We encourage any and all feedback!

Know A Librarian – Nancy

It’s March Madness and the perfect time to help you get to know another Brookens Librarian.  This month we are featuring Nancy Weichert! Nancy is a Visiting Assistant Professor at Brookens Library. She earned her Masters in Library & Information Science from Dominican University in 2006 and has brought a wonderful and unique point of view to the library. Her love of librarianship is evident and she brings a positive, encouraging attitude to the workplace.

Nancy is a joyful individual who finds pleasure in many things. One of her greatest loves is her sweet daughter Mazie, who is just over a year old! She is able to successfully balance being a professional librarian and a mother, making the juggling act seem effortless. Motherhood has given her a level of patience and understanding that benefits the students, staff, faculty and community members she works with.

Nancy loves the outdoors, the crisp air, the sunshine, so naturally she enjoys a good walk and riding her bike. She also enjoys gathering with good friends and enjoying quality, local food that has been respectfully grown and distributed. Though she refers to herself as a little “hippie dippie”, Nancy has been known to enjoy ridiculous reality television programs like Bravo’s “The Real Housewives” series!!! We should mention she also likes more respectable programs as well, such as “Dexter”.

In her work at Brookens she is always exploring what’s new in technology and is helping expand the Library’s social media offerings. Instruction is another one of her key interests. Nancy often provides educational opportunities/workshops to various student groups! Her mission as a librarian is simple: help students succeed. We hope you enjoyed getting to know Nancy better! Say hello the next time you see her at an event or working at the reference desk!

Be a HERO to Brookens

March 1st kicks off the University of Illinois Springfield’s Faculty & Staff Giving Campaign. The objective is to help raise awareness of what the needs of specific departments are and to inform those interested in donating about how their donations would be used. This years theme is “Be A Hero”. Here at Brookens we’ve interpreted the theme 2 ways: First, we believe are staff are all superheros. Each role is vital to providing the resources and services to the public. Secondly, we think those that help us in that effort through volunteering, support, attending events, advocating on our behalf are also heroes!

Running and maintaining the resources and services of an academic library requires substantial funding. Brookens Library is proud to offer the high quality of electronic and print resources, a large space for patrons to use, and exceptional services. Your support goes a long way – so we would love for you to become a hero and donate! All donation should be made through the foundation office.  You can also give to Brookens by becoming a member of the Friends of Brookens Library. To become a friend please contact Marcia Rossi at 217-206-6597.

Interested in attending the campaign kickoff? It’s March 1st from 12:30-1:30 in the PAC lobby. We hope to see you there!

Know a Librarian: Pamela

Last month we kicked off our “Know a Librarian” series. Each month during Spring & Fall we will feature one of our fabulous faculty librarians. This month we want you to get to know Pamela M. Salela, Associate Professor & Coordinator of (CINRC) Central Illinois Nonprofit Resource Center.

Pamela holds a M.S. in Educational Policy Studies from the University of Illinois – Urbana/Champaign (UIUC) & a M.S. in Library & Information Science from UIUC.  She also earned both an undergraduate & graduate minors in Women’s Studies. She brings her passion and interest in the field to UIS where she is currently teaching WGS301: Intro to Women, Gender & Society.

At Brookens, Pamela serves as the library liaison to Women, Gender & Society, African American Studies, Music, Public Administration and Educational Leadership. She’s also very active on the UIS campus, particularly in campus governance – Senate, Campus Planning & Budgeting. She loves helping students at the reference desk & really enjoys finding those teachable moments.

She also works with the Brookens government documents collection and was recently appointed to the Illinois Government Depository Council. She’s active in the Association of College & Research Libraries and is co-chairing a Program Planning Committee for the annual American Library Association Conference that will be held in Chicago in 2013.

Pamela’s talents & interests don’t end there! She’s passionate about music, theater, exercise, travel & her cats (one Italian, one Chinese, & one African American).

Though she loves all kinds of music, she is especially fond of classical, jazz and folk. While in graduate school Pamela sang in many choirs on our sister campus in Champaign-Urbana including Amasong, Chorus, Oratorio Society, Slavik Choir and chamber choir. She has also done some solo jazz as well as folk, where she will occasionally accompany herself on guitar. Pamela has been a part of several theatrical productions over the years & she is currently assisting the UIS theatre department with locating sound effects for True West.

Phew! She’s one busy, fascinating and active lady – and there’s more to her than we can squeeze in this post! We’re glad you got to know her a little better!
