Know A Librarian – Nancy

It’s March Madness and the perfect time to help you get to know another Brookens Librarian.  This month we are featuring Nancy Weichert! Nancy is a Visiting Assistant Professor at Brookens Library. She earned her Masters in Library & Information Science from Dominican University in 2006 and has brought a wonderful and unique point of view to the library. Her love of librarianship is evident and she brings a positive, encouraging attitude to the workplace.

Nancy is a joyful individual who finds pleasure in many things. One of her greatest loves is her sweet daughter Mazie, who is just over a year old! She is able to successfully balance being a professional librarian and a mother, making the juggling act seem effortless. Motherhood has given her a level of patience and understanding that benefits the students, staff, faculty and community members she works with.

Nancy loves the outdoors, the crisp air, the sunshine, so naturally she enjoys a good walk and riding her bike. She also enjoys gathering with good friends and enjoying quality, local food that has been respectfully grown and distributed. Though she refers to herself as a little “hippie dippie”, Nancy has been known to enjoy ridiculous reality television programs like Bravo’s “The Real Housewives” series!!! We should mention she also likes more respectable programs as well, such as “Dexter”.

In her work at Brookens she is always exploring what’s new in technology and is helping expand the Library’s social media offerings. Instruction is another one of her key interests. Nancy often provides educational opportunities/workshops to various student groups! Her mission as a librarian is simple: help students succeed. We hope you enjoyed getting to know Nancy better! Say hello the next time you see her at an event or working at the reference desk!

THIS WEEK: iPad and Virtual Library Tours

Help the library reach new and returning students by promoting library tours in class!

February 15: 5-6 p.m. and 6-7 p.m. (iPad Tours)
February 16: 12-1 p.m. and 7-8 p.m. (Virtual Tours)

Make an announcement in class or through Blackboard and send your students a link to the schedule: http://illinois.edu/calendar/list/2725.  A majority of students that attend drop-in library tours at UIS learn about them from their instructors, and receive some type of credit. If you choose to offer credit for attending one of the sessions, an e-mail will be sent to you following the sessions.  With new students joining UIS each and every semester, we want to make sure they are learning about the library resources and services available to them.

During the tours students will learn where to find books and articles, how to access resources from off-campus, where to get research help, and more!  If you would like more specific information about what we will cover during these sessions, or have any other questions, please contact Amanda Binder at binder2@uis.edu or 217-206-8458.

Library Workshops

Library YouTube Channel

Library YouTubeThe library recently updated many of the tutorials on the UISlibrary YouTube Channel. As students begin to conduct research for your courses, consider referring them to the tutorials for quick assistance with creating a library account, managing citations, accessing full-text library resources, finding articles and books, and requesting materials from other libraries. These tutorials may also help to familiarize you with new resources at the library, including Quick Search and My ILL (your account for Interlibrary Loan requests). If you would like to embed any of these videos into Blackboard or other course sites, click on share, then embed, and copy the code. If you have any questions, or would like to request tutorials for specific courses or lessons, please contact your library liaison.

Goodbye PrairieCat, Hello Quick Search

Gone are the days of referring to our local library catalog as “PrairieCat”.  It might take all of us awhile to adjust, but we’ll get there.  Going forward, please replace “PrairieCat” with “Library Catalog” in your course materials.  You can still access the local catalog from the library home page using the “Books & Media” tab.  Below the search box are direct links to the Advanced Search in the local catalog, and I-Share.

So, What’s Quick Search?

Quick Search is our new discovery tool, and your one-stop shop for many of the important resources and services you have come to value at Brookens Library, including I-Share, Interlibrary Loan, and library databases.  The Quick Search simultaneously searches across the electronic and print holdings of Brookens Library, I-Share member libraries, and libraries worldwide.  But it doesn’t stop there.  You can actually access articles directly from the Quick Search – just click on the “Check for Electronic Resources” button.  You can also easily place I-Share and ILL requests for particular books or articles directly through the Quick Search.  See how it works:

We will be posting tips and tricks for how to use this resource on our blog throughout the year, so remember to follow us!

EasyBib: New Citation Management Tool

The library recently purchased a new citation management tool that will allow patrons to easily export and manage citations from our new Quick Search.

EasyBib provides formatting in all of the major citation styles, including APA, MLA, and Chicago/Turabian.  Once students upload citations into EasyBib, they can be organized into folders (or “Projects”), and using the Notebook feature, they can create outlines that reference where particular sources can be used for support in their paper.  They can also add notes to their citations for future reference, including annotations.  To learn about all of these features and more, visit the EasyBib Library Edition site: http://easybib.com/products/libraryedition.  As with all citation management tools, students should always double check their citations against the appropriate style manuals.

Why EasyBib?

Over 4,000 UIS patrons had already been using the free edition of EasyBib when we considered purchasing it for the library.  True to its name, this citation management tool is EASY to use, especially for undergraduate students.  It also incorporates information literacy, plagiarism prevention, website evaluation, and other research tools into the citation management experience for students.

Getting Started…

From the library homepage, click on “My Citations” located under “My Accounts.”  Once you create a free account, you can always login here to view your citations and projects.  You can manually upload citations in EasyBib, or export citations directly from the Quick Search.
